How did you become a designer?
To say the least, I was raised in an artistic home. My Mom is an extremely talented interior designer and my Dad always pushed me to follow my dreams. I started off by designing Christmas cards, which my Mom sold in her interior design shop. Luckily her loyal clients would buy a few, which of course gave me an immense amount of confidence in my artistic skills! In high school I was lucky enough to have the most amazing art teacher in the world. He pushed me and motivated me to pursue an artistic career. At Chico State, I was originally a Studio Art major. After delving deeper into the program and learning more about myself, I discovered Graphic Design, which I realized was perfect for me! I was lucky enough to find a job at the campus print shop, which shaped the rest of my life. And as they say the rest is history!
What was your inspiration to get into invitation design?
After graduating I toured several design studios and was not motivated by the work they were creating. I got super nervous and was contemplating my decision to be a designer! During this phase, I had dinner at a very close family friend’s house. She showed me her home studio where she used Envelopments products to create invitations for her clients. I fell in love with what she was creating. The paper was beautiful, everything was unique, and the concept of creating invitations was to fun. I realized I had found my path as a graphic designer.
What made you apply for Envelopments?
After my family friend showed me the Envelopments website, I constantly read their blog and looked to their designs for inspiration. In my eyes what they created was flawless: an awesome understanding of typography, graphics, and bringing paper into play in so many creative ways. No less than one week after I finished my internship, did I discover that Envelopments was looking for a new graphic designer on their blog!
What was the hiring process like at Envelopments?
The hiring process was very in-depth. There were a total of three steps. Let’s just say for the entire month of this process I was clinging to my phone constantly checking to see if I had received any new emails! I started out by sending in my resume and portfolio. The second round was a submission of three communiqués, using Envelopments papers and products. We were asked to show each as a press-ready file. The third round was the interview process and I signed up for the first interview! I was so nervous that I waited in my car for about an hour to ensure I would be there on time. During the interview I started to warm up to Ramon, Mark Reyes, Deborah and Mark Smith, and felt an instant connection with them; I was actually able to be myself!
What was the last custom communiqué that you’ve mailed?
I just recently designed Valentines for all my friends. Although I have not completed them yet I cannot wait to send them out! There is nothing better than receiving fun mail from a friend, and I can’t wait to make them smile with a loving Valentine!
My best friend lives in Northern California, and ever since I moved down south, we have been pen pals. We try to write each other every few weeks, and although we constantly talk on the phone hand-written notes are fun to receive from one another!
What do you like to do outside of work?
I am an avid yogi; just finished a teacher training program so I would love to start teaching soon. I love baking, cooking is near impossible for me, but baking I can definitely do. I admire people who are able to prepare a meal without sampling over half of it before it even makes it onto a platter. I love baking because the smell of freshly baked treats is unbeatable. I see dessert as an art and love creating masterpieces out of it.
Most of all, I love being outside and enjoying the fresh air. Whether it’s on a bike ride or hiking around, it’s extremely therapeutic.
